I am a Plank Owner and was an 18 year old Marine PFC on the ship from Commissioning until we returned to the West Coast sometime in late October 1945. During GQ I was a 1st loader on the lower 40 mm gun mount behind the island, and as a Captains orderly for Captain Barner. Two years ago some of my Marine buddies from the 1944 - 45 era found me through the internet, and now there are 10 of us from that time who are in touch.

My best friend was Earl R. Mosen (died in the late 50's). He was a 3/c?? and a crew chief or plane captain of one of the Corsairs 1944-1945. His widow, BettyAnn would like to hear from anyone who knew her husband, Earl. You can reach her through me. I visited Earl one night when the Shang was anchored in San Diego the latter part of '45 or first of '46. I'm a Tin Can sailor and almost got lost aboard her. If any of you remember Earl, I sure would appreciate hearing from you and so would BettyAnn. Thanks. Gene.

My uncle, Harry C. Notestine of Saxton, PA (deceased 5/96) was a plank owner, serving aboard the Shangri-La from 10/28/43 to 3/46. I recently came into possession of his memorabilia from the ship including his plank owner's certificate, many photos, invitation to the commissioning of the ship, Thanksgiving and Christmas menus, Christmas cards with the ship's name, the 1st anniversary log, copies of the Horizon, etc. He also kept a very detailed log of the ship during his service. It's really a piece of history in itself. I enjoyed reading through it, and I'm sure he would have loved to see this website, which I've just now found.

My father, Berthel "Bert" Cedermark, originally from Brooklyn, NY was a petty officer on the Shangri La from, I believe, 1944 through 1946. His duties included loading bombs onto the fighter planes. He died in June, 2001. He did have some fond memories of the ship but also disturbing ones, having been on it in wartime. Like many veterans he avoided talking about them. I am curious if the ship was ever involved in a direct attack on it, as this information is not evident in it's online history. I remember visiting the ship in New York with him when I was a kid in the 1960's and he being aghast that escalators had been installed on it - the height of luxury compared to it's WWII configuration.

Thank you for preserving a bit of history with this site. I served on the Shangri La from 1969 to 1970 as an Electronics Technician. If any other visitors have the pictures, I'd like to see photos of the ship in dry dock in Yokosuka in 1970. That was when we broke a main propeller shaft and almost lost a screw while on station off Viet Nam. In dry dock there was good visual evidence of hull damage forward on the starboard side. It proves that we actually DID run the ship aground in Mayport, Florida after a disasterous dependents day cruise, and did not "run over the anchor chain" in an emergency stop as was reported.

My father, Alfred Loiselle was on board during Operation Crossroads in 1946. He never talked about his Navy days much, so details for me are sketchy. He said his job was "Fireman" and worked in the boiler room. After many strokes over the past 6 years debilitated him to varying degrees, he passed away last December 14th. I'm glad I found this site, so hopefully I can fill in the pieces and share them with my children. My now 4 year old son and him were particularly close. Soon, I may find some old photos he had, and e-mail them for posting in his memory. Thank you, Chris Loiselle

My stepfather, Marine PFC David E. Aznavoorian is a plank owner and served on the Shangri-La from 16 January 1945 to 15 March, 1946. He was a member of the Marine detachment that occupied Yokosuka at the end of the war. David is a native of Medford, Massachusetts, and is currently living in Winhrop, Massachusetts. He is very proud of his service on this great ship, and I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from any of his old shipmates

My father was on the Shangri-la in WWII. I don't have a log book pertaining exclusively to the Shang. But he did give me his Fighting Squadron Eighty-five Log Book about five years ago. The dates on the cover are from May 15, 1944 thru Sept. 25, 1945. His name is Walter R. Green. He piloted Corsairs and chased Zeros back then. Now living in Florida, doing well and receives updated information about Reunions etc. thru the mail. We've talked about attending a Reunion together. Maybe this year it will happen.

My brother was on the Shange in WW 2. He was a gunners mate His name James C. "Jim" Warner. But I'm sorry to say he passed away in 1974. And now for me. I also was on her too. I was on her when she was recommiss in Jan. 1955 until Feb. 1957. Had some good times & some bad. But like all things the good times always outweigh the bad. I would like to hear from some of the old airdales from the V-2 Cats crew. Where ever you might be take care.

My father (Bruce H. Gardner) searved aboard the "Shang" from Nov. 1958 to 1962. he was a senior coxwain on the officers boats. He searved with some great men and I am here to say thank you all who were there for making sure my father returned home safely. He is currently a heavy equiptment mech. and a CMC\RET (SeaBees) I am here to see if I can find anyone who knows my father. He has mentioned some names and one that sticks with me to date is bell. They were on the same boat. If I am not mistaken he was in S-2. compartment A-02-09-1L. I will never forget the stories that he tells of the shang and the adventures aboard her. Bell if you do read this let me say thank you for befriending my father and please get ahold of me so that you and he can be in contact again. One thing I do remember is my father speaking of a fire in the Nuclear weapons compartment, while everyone was running for their lives he ate their cake as he says "Where ya gonna go to hide from a nuke?" well I really hope to get some response from this and I thank you all.
